Traditional Styrian pumpkin seed oil is a different product in almost every respect: mechanically pressed in small batches, sold unrefined, and used in small quantities as a finishing oil rather than as a frying medium. The criticism aimed at industrial seed oils does not automatically transfer to this one, but the shared name means it often gets caught in the same conversation regardless.
Pumpkin seed oil is high in linoleic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid, and some nutrition commentators argue that a high ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fat in the modern diet contributes to low-grade inflammation. The evidence here is genuinely mixed: some observational and mechanistic research supports concern about very high omega-6 intake from processed food overall, while other reviews and controlled trials have not found that linoleic acid itself drives inflammation at typical dietary intakes, and some show favourable effects on blood lipids. This is an active scientific debate, not a settled question, and pumpkin seed oil used in the modest quantities typical of a finishing oil is a small contributor to total dietary omega-6 either way — a very different exposure from a diet built around large amounts of fried food cooked in refined seed oil.

Pumpkin seed oil is not a diet food. Like any pure oil, it is energy-dense, delivering roughly the same calories per tablespoon as any other vegetable oil — around 120 kilocalories. Marketing language that frames it as a wellness product can obscure this plain nutritional fact. A true allergy to pumpkin seed is uncommon but real, and it should be taken seriously rather than dismissed because the oil has a wholesome reputation. Reported reactions range from mild oral or skin symptoms to, rarely, more significant responses, and cross-reactivity has been described with other seeds and, in some cases, with certain plant pollens. Anyone with a known seed allergy, or with new symptoms such as itching, swelling, or digestive upset after trying the oil for the first time, should stop use and seek medical advice rather than continuing on the assumption that a natural product cannot cause a reaction.
The same polyunsaturated fatty acids that make the oil nutritionally interesting also make it chemically unstable. Exposed to heat, light, or extended air contact, pumpkin seed oil oxidises and turns rancid, developing a harsh, chemical smell that is unmistakable once you know what to look for. A rancid oil is not simply less pleasant — oxidised fats are generally considered undesirable to consume regularly, which is a legitimate reason to discard a bottle that smells wrong rather than using it up out of thriftiness. Authentic Styrian pumpkin seed oil is genuinely expensive to produce, given modest crop yields and labour-intensive small-batch pressing, and that cost is reflected fairly in its price. But the premium also attracts less honest behaviour: diluted or mislabelled oil sold at a discount, vague country-of-origin claims, and marketing copy that reaches well past what any study has actually shown, sometimes describing the oil as a near-cure for conditions no serious trial has examined. None of this amounts to a reason to avoid pumpkin seed oil.
